Assignment for Thursday, Sept. 20

Work on the sound of your draft. You already worked on the long vowel sounds in a description of a person or a place. Now take that same description and do the following:
1. Change the long, deep vowel sounds, and change them to short, light vowel sounds: short i, short a, and short e sounds in particular.
2. Then change those vowel sounds to consonant sounds. First, try hard consonant sounds, like k, hard c, and hard g. Then, try soft consonant sounds like s, sh, and soft ch.

When you finish this experiment, think about which sounds most contribute to the sense, the meaning of the description, and keep that one if you think it works better than your original description.

In class, we'll continue to workshop your stories.

Assignment for Thursday, Sept. 13

If you feel confident that you can eventually write three-to-five pages about the topic you’ve been writing about so far for homework, write one additional page for that personal essay. If you are not confident about your topic, write a page about another topic. If you can’t think of another topic, continue writing about the original topic as described above. That is to say, write another page for Thursday.

Assignment for Tuesday, Sept. 11

Write one page of a draft for a story about a personal experience. If you already have a page, try to improve the details of your story so far. Keep in mind the qualities of details and imagery we discussed and practiced in class today, especially concerning the five senses.
